You are listening to the simple success podcast, financial life coaching from a happiness perspective. Thanks for joining us for this next episode, where we get into important questions that you have and how they can be explained so that they don't get in the way of succeeding. Hello, everyone. This is john with the simple success podcast, financial life coaching from happiness perspective, because we know you want to show us some serious love in return for the tremendous benefits you get from us, please head over to https://anchor.fm/simplesuccess. That's one-word simple success whack support there, you can choose when $9 and 99 cent per month investor level of support a $4 and 99% level or a basic intro level of just 99 cents per month.

That's not much when you compare it to a stockbroker, right? And this is so much more sensible to leave us a voice message which just might see the light of day and a future podcast go to https://anchor.fm/simplesuccess. Again, one-word simple success, black message. I won't repeat those links because weird And anyway, show notes. I could chant like a Buddhist monk or something like that. Or I could just answer questions for you, and help you do the greatest thing that you could ever do in your life. And that's just what we're going to do.

We're going to start today with Murphy week. This is the Murphy week portion of the podcast. I call it that because it comes from Dr. Joseph Murphy's book, How to unleash the power of your subconscious mind. Some of you listening right now have a copy of that book since we sent it to you. In that book, Dr. Murphy leads us on a journey through an entire year with a positive affirmation for each of the 52 weeks. What's coming right now is where we are right now. So don't you get the wrong idea. I'm focused on helping you with real world results. The meditative, even wishful thinking feeling that that can generate in some people is not there to mislead you, but rather to open yourself up to the idea that success comes from believing that you can Hello successful people. My name is John Brandy, and this is the simple success podcast, season one, Episode Five.

Our question today and therefore the title of this episode is, do you feel encouraged? This is an expansion of the Promised How do you feel now? The relevant Murphy week phrase, embrace and embody truth? Where does that come from? That comes from the book How to unleash the power of your subconscious mind which we're applying to investing. We must embrace in a body truth, no matter what thinking if and that we subscribe to, when I say if any, it's because we all me included, definitely have times where we're not thinking at least not thinking it through. And that's okay. Because patience, you should apply that. And by the way, if I make any kind of a reference to God, please understand that I mean Infinite Intelligence, which is a phrase used by Napoleon Hill, among others.

You can call this God, Allah, Buddha, brah, Shinto or any other name important to you, for our purposes, I mean, only that which inspires you listen to this phrase, whatever is vexing me now is leading me and I am free and at peace. Dr. Murphy applies that to embracing and embodying truth. He also says, lies, deception, misinformation, half-truth and false beliefs are the root cause of a great deal of human suffering, because they give rise to distorted thoughts. Let's look that mindset into investing.

There are lies and deception and misinformation, half-truths and false beliefs surrounding investing. But as I've said before, it's not our goal to go there and unpack those. Instead, we're here to get past those and to become winners. In this general statement, Dr. Murphy is saying that those things, live deception, etc., are the root cause of a great deal of human suffering, because they give rise to distorted thoughts. I believe the corollary here is that those same things give rise to people not investing, even when they understand why it's good to do so. Therefore, they're allowing themselves to be victimized with distorted thoughts. Instead, let's all have thoughts that are positive, which help us toward our goals. That's why we talk about embracing and embody it back to our question, do you feel encouraged? As always, our question is, in our own minds, automatically replaced by a few seemingly related questions like this first one, when will I feel happy? Well, you'll feel happy when you want to feel happy. That's the answer to that question. And I don't mean that lightly.

I mean, only to reinforce the idea that it's entirely up to you. I've given you some tools already. And there's more to come, many more to come. I'm here to support you. I'm here to give you good reason to form decisions that will be helpful to you, with your agreement that you also find them helpful, and that I assist you in making them easy. That is support, which is almost the same thing as encouragement, which we'll talk about here in a second. When will I feel happy? The answer is entirely up to you. Next question, what is encouragement Its courage, as I alluded to in the previous question, encouragement is support. If you step out to achieve a goal you need support. When I give you that support, then I'm giving you encouragement. There's the answer to the question was encouragement. Now, is it courage? This is a corollary following question that we're still going to call a big part of question number two, the answer is sometimes, yes. And I'll tell you why in a second, only, you have the courage to step out and do something, I am giving you encouragement, support for you to step out and do the thing that you want to do.

They can be related in the sense that it may require courage on my part, just to give you encouragement, to give you the courage to step out and do what you want to do. They can be related. But it's important to remember, you have to step out, you have to have the courage, even if you're afraid, like Dan Rather said, which we talked about a little bit ago. Question three, what is courageous investing? That's simply taking the principles that we've already discussed here, adding courage and applying it to investing? Because it makes us feel good, because we understand why we're doing it, even though we have to learn along the way. That's okay. As long as we learn. Question for is courageous investing better? Well, I think so. But that's because he gives me a motivational, happy, fun reason for actually doing it. You probably think I geek out on the numbers.

And occasionally I do but compared to some expectations, not even a little bit, because I understand that it's not geeking out on the numbers that makes people happy in the long run. In fact, when it comes to finance, people ask me, how do you deal with all the math? Spoiler alert?

Finance is not calculus, or trigonometry or even geometry? It's just addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. That's about it. Last question, who agrees with this idea? Well, if you agree with the idea, then we're ready to go forward. If you don't agree with the idea, or you're on the cusp, if you're on the fence, that's okay, you're still listening. And it means that you could be convinced, it doesn't mean that I've convinced you, but it means that you could be convinced, I encourage you to keep listening, you will help me convince you. Do you think I'm being silly here, but from my experience, you just have a bit more to learn? So, let's get to it.

Imagine giving yourself this pep talk every morning. Today, I will be a total jerk, adorning the perfectly reasonable desires of everyone I know including and especially myself, anyone planning to ever look back on today will think twice. Now, let me take that same sentence and turn it around into investing. Today, I've decided to not be encouraged. Instead, I will believe that I cannot win, and that everyone is against me. Or to be even more specific. Today, I have decided not to invest. I don't believe I could win. Everyone is against me. Or they're faster than me, or they know more than me. At any rate, there's no use bothering. That's the mindset that a lot of people have. If you just listen to investors, if you listen to investing advice, you can't help hearing it. I'm not above it. Nor am I above the psychological principles I talked about from time to time. Even Napoleon Hill said he needed to protect his mind from really good sales pitches. And you can find that in an audio mp3 series on a CD from Amazon called your right to be rich, which we'll link in the show notes. And that's what goes on in a lot of people's heads. We're here to claim victory over our own heads overthinking too much. We avoid the infamous analysis paralysis by taking action and letting it go not worrying about it.

Too many people don't realize this. But being too wrapped up in a particular outcome is sort of like a circular firing squad. You're asking no insisting that an option for you to be disappointed be included. Did you hear that? You're asking? No, you're insisting that an option for you to be disappointed. be included in your list of options. How's that for changing your thinking? I've learned and therefore I'm teaching that calmness helps us to get to any of our goals. Of course, we'll spend a few minutes on the long-term importance of that. But today's question you remember is, do you feel encouraged, as we're accustomed to doing? Let's turn that around. We're going to take your question into an arena where we can answer it by changing the way we look at it. How am I going to go about flipping the script in our question today? As with everything we start by using our imagination, we make it silly. Why? Because silly things are the most memorable things. We make it fun. Remember our earlier example.

Today I will be shameless, inopportune and objective awful. I will give others the power to really get me ticked off and everyone except me will wish that today never happened. And remember how I flip it and put it into investing. Today I have decided to invest I know I will win, and my expectations and commitments are appropriate. I will have fun. I will help others and I will help myself. That's so good. We need to say it again. together. And out loud. Ready? Today I have decided to invest. I know I will win. And my expectations and commitments are appropriate. I will have fun; I will help others and I will help myself. How's that for flipping the script? It's some use of the imagination, I admit. But it's what we have to do to get over whatever is stopping the question, do you feel encouraged, become statement, you feel encouraged, or even you did it.

Whatever works for you is fine, as long as you do it. If anything is stopping you from anything, it is your mindset, the psychology concept to running this is confirmation bias. And we've linked that in the show notes. It's a bit of a twist on that if you're familiar with the idea of confirmation bias is usually described as the tendency to surround yourself with ideas you already believe. We often do this with television we watch or people we hang out with. Confirmation bias, though fits in this case, because you're acting in accordance with your already held beliefs. Don't feel bad, we all do this every day. I'm in trading to recognize it, and to avoid it as much as possible. And I'll walk you through that to remember this is financial life coaching. From a happiness perspective, we've got a few pieces coming up here to both reinforce and enhance these ideas. In the past, I've always just written off by tendency to fall into those holes as being just something I do. That's a form of letting go. But as you'll see, it's a lot better to bring on experts to do the enhancing part followed by questions from all of you.

Here we go, though rabbit hole. This is the part of the podcast are unwilling to put those tangents I often go on, I had to create the segment to have a place to put those tangents with the idea of tying them into the topic of the episode. Thanks to my rabbit hole advisor, I'm undertaking an effort to stay on topic and not fall down those rabbit holes like I know I do sometimes. I've also learned from her that well, at least in Australia, one can avoid falling down rabbit holes by talking to the rabbit. In other words, I think experts go on those tangents. I'm going to keep that in mind when I'm looking for guests for future episodes of this podcast.

We know you need help. We have one on one coaching for you. Okay, there are a few more steps and we'll go more deeply into them in future episodes. But boil down, it can be that easy. Next week, we're going to look at another question many people have been asking, and that is why you can trust, I hope you'll say something like because though there are reasons to worry about something nearly every day, the world continues to turn, we have to trust when I was an active stockbroker. I had a gentleman once asked me what would happen to his account in the case of a nuclear war. We were in Seattle on the east side to be specific. And so, I told him, you know, we're five miles from Microsoft headquarters and about 30 miles from Boeing.

So, I don't think it's really going to matter much to you. He didn't trust that. And fortunately, he didn't become a customer either. Unlike you, he didn't have the mindset to benefit from subscribing to a helpful way of thinking like this is of course what spend a few minutes on the long-term importance of that.
